Event: Lichtjesroute (route of lights)
The 'Lichtjesroute' (route of lights) is a 22 km long route through the city of Eindhoven which is this year illuminated from Wednesday, 18 September until Sunday, 13 October 2013. To commemorate the Dutch liberation and to express this in an "Eindhoven-way", the citizens placed in 1945 candles and light bulbs, just after World War II. Since 1984 this tradition has been repeated every year, and creates a 22 km route through Eindhoven, which is illuminated by lights. By using hundreds of thousands of light bulbs, LED's and gas-discharge lamps, volunteers spend their free time to entertain 200.000 people every year that drive, walk or cycle this light route.
For adults it takes approximately three hours to cycle along the whole route. By car you need approximately 1,5 hrs on weekdays and three hours on weekends (traffic jams).
A detailed map of the Lichtjesroute as well as an audio guide (Dutch) can be found on the website http://www.lichtjesroute.org/english/.
